NEW INSIGHTS
INTO THE LUNG

TheSwisstom electrode belt measures the respiration in individual lung regions and displays it – in contrast to other imaging methods – in real time. We prepared these complex medical data in a way that enables them to be analyzed and interpreted quickly and safely.

Less is more

Swisstom BB² is used in intensive care units to monitor artificial respiration. Even under time pressure and in critical situations, nursing staff and doctors need to record complex clinical information quickly and clearly. That is why we have opted for a minimalist structure and a clear design that is consistently reduced to the essentials. The functions are divided into three main areas that can be shown or hidden.
The areas that are not selected nevertheless show the central data in a condensed form and thus provide an overview of the patient’s condition at all times. Critical situations are immediately recognizable. Details are just a tap away. The color scheme also clearly directs the focus to the most important information.

“The usability is excellent. It takes less than ten minutes to understand how to use it. I’ve never experienced that with a medical device of this complexity.”

The process

At the heart of the application is the visualization of lung parameters. They show, for example, where delays occur during inhalation or exhalation.
But which pattern is best suited to display the parameters? Which colors should we use to make the important values stand out?
In order to make the complex measurement data quickly “understandable” visually, our information visualization experts tested various approaches.
The result: the visualizations are designed to be unobtrusive. Their information density is reduced. Thanks to the selected grid and the defined color scheme, doctors can immediately see where and how they need to adjust ventilation.

The team

The solution benefited from the intensive exchange between our project team, the customer and the users. Together, we thoroughly discussed every detail in order to keep the interface as minimal as possible.

Focus on the user

The bright color scheme and light typeface look fresh and appealing – human and not too technical.

Trustworthy design

The friendly, light aesthetics set Swisstom BB² apart from comparable medical interfaces and support communication with relatives.

Smooth integration

Thanks to the flexible interface, Swisstom BB² can be easily integrated into other devices or their monitors and the branding can be adapted to other corporate designs.

Award-winning medical technology

Swisstom convinced the jury of the iF DESIGN AWARD and won the coveted design prize in the Communication Design category.
