Medical Testing Laboratory for Usability Testing of Medical Devices

Test your medical device in the environment where it will be used—from the operating room to the patient’s room, the doctor’s office, and even the living room. We’ll set up the right environment for your study, either here in Munich or at a location of your choice.

What is the UID Medical Testing Laboratory?

UID’s Medical Testing Lab offers a flexible range of testing services for formative and summative usability evaluations of medical devices. Manufacturers work with us to test devices, software, and apps with real users in realistic, simulated settings such as operating rooms, patient rooms, doctors’ offices, or home environments. This takes place at our facilities in Munich, in rented spaces, or at partner laboratories, depending on your product’s needs.

  • Location: Munich
  • Testing available in: Berlin, Darmstadt, Höhn, Cologne, Ludwigsburg, Mannheim
  • Mobile recording technology, usable anywhere
  • Languages: German and English
  • Report for the Usability Engineering File in accordance with IEC 62366-1

Test environments: Operating room, doctor’s office, treatment room, and home use

We set up the environment to suit your product and your target audience: At our premises in Munich, in rented premises, or at a partner laboratory if specialised infrastructure is required.

Surgery and Operating Room

For high-risk devices and systems, tested by physicians, surgical nurses, and anesthesiologists. The specific equipment depends on the medical specialty.

Typical equipment

  • Operating table and surgical lights
  • Anesthesia machines
  • Vital signs monitoring systems
  • Room climate control

Additionally, depending on requirements

  • C-arm for imaging
  • Surgical preparation area
  • Cleaning and sterilization area
  • Recovery room or intensive care unit

This is how we put it into practice

Simple scenario: You provide the equipment, and we’ll conduct testing in a cleared-out conference room in Munich.

With infrastructure: We’ll rent a suitable space. We’ll schedule at least two days for setup and configuration, and we’ll coordinate with you in advance regarding power, water, air conditioning, and delivery.

Medical Practice

For diagnostics, rapid tests, and equipment used in the day-to-day work of practice teams, tested with doctors and practice staff.

Typical equipment

  • Examination table and chairs
  • Medical staff workstation with a PC
  • Examination equipment, such as ECG or ultrasound

This is how we put it into practice

Suitable rooms, a laptop, a monitor, and an examination table are available at UID in Munich. We use props such as needle disposal containers, disinfectants, and bandages to create a realistic setting. If we need additional medical equipment as props, we rent it as needed.

Living Room and Home Use

For devices and apps that patients use on their own at home, tested with laypeople.

Typical setup

  • Dining table, couch area, and bed
  • Bathroom and toilet
  • Selection depends on the use case

How we implement it

We book an apartment with the appropriate furnishings for the test and the preparation period. In Munich, for example, this is within walking distance of our location.

Patient rooms on the nursing ward

For infusions, monitoring, and alarms in everyday ward care; tested with nursing staff and doctors.

Typical Features

  • Hospital bed with side cabinet
  • IV pole
  • Connections for electricity, medical gases, and water
  • Bathroom and toilet

This is how we put it into practice

A simple case: Without gas and water connections and without a real hospital bed, we conduct tests in our Munich facility using a treatment table and a dummy patient. We have already used this approach to conduct summative evaluations of infusion pumps.

High Standards: We conduct testing in our usability lab, using existing recording equipment and the ability to recruit professionals as test subjects.

Your setting isn’t listed?

Our recording equipment is portable and can be used anywhere. That’s why we’ll set up your test environment at a location of your choice.

Why a realistic test laboratory provides better results

  • Realistic: Test subjects operate in their familiar environment, which reveals usability issues that would remain hidden in a neutral meeting room.
  • Flexible: We organize the space, setup, and technology—whether it’s our own facilities in Munich, rented spaces, or partner labs—depending on what your product requires.
  • Verifiable: Recordings and reports comply with the Usability Engineering File as defined by IEC 62366-1.

Facilities and Procedures at the UID Test Laboratory

From the briefing to the final report, we guide your study through four steps. Our proprietary recording technology ensures that every observation is verifiable.

The equipment is easy to transport and will operate anywhere there is a 230 V domestic power supply.

Frequently Asked Questions About Usability Testing of Medical Devices

A medical testing laboratory is a testing environment in which medical devices are tested for usability by real users in a simulated real-world setting. At UID, the spectrum ranges from the operating room to the patient’s room, the doctor’s office, and even the living room.

A laboratory usability test is suitable for all medical devices that people must operate, read, or adjust—that is, for hardware, software, and apps alike. Typical examples include diagnostic systems, monitoring devices, life-support and therapeutic systems, rapid tests, and digital health applications. This type of testing is particularly useful in situations where operating errors could jeopardize the safety of patients or users, as these very risks must be comprehensively addressed within the framework of usability in accordance with IEC 62366-1.

We set up four environments: an operating room, a doctor’s office, a patient room on a nursing ward, and a living room for home use. We set up simpler versions in our facilities in Munich; for more complex scenarios, we rent suitable spaces or use partner labs, such as a hybrid operating room real-world lab or the usability lab at a university hospital. Since our recording equipment is portable and requires only a 230 V outlet, we can also set up other testing environments at a location of your choice.

Formative evaluation accompanies the development process and provides early feedback on prototypes and design so that usability issues can be resolved before the product is completed. Summative evaluation takes place at the end of the development process and validates that the medical device can be used safely and effectively under realistic conditions. Both procedures are part of the usability engineering process according to IEC 62366-1, with summative evaluation serving as documented evidence for approval. You can find more information on our pages about formative evaluation.

The test subjects come from your actual target audience—depending on the product, this may include doctors, surgical nurses, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, medical office staff, or patients and laypeople using the product at home. We handle the recruitment to ensure that the participants match your defined user groups. For special requirements—such as testing in a university hospital’s usability lab—we can recruit on-site professionals as test subjects.

Yes, we tailor the environment to each study individually. During the briefing, we work with you to determine what equipment, devices, and usage scenarios your test requires, and we set up the space, props, and technology accordingly. If necessary, we’ll rent any missing medical equipment or props, and if your setting can’t be recreated in our facilities, we’ll set it up at a location of your choice.

The report documents the objectives, methodology, test setup, participants, and the observed usability issues along with their evaluation, allowing it to be directly incorporated into the Usability Engineering File in accordance with IEC 62366-1. For summative evaluations, it also includes the results regarding the performance of safety-related tasks, and the test records substantiate each individual observation.

The number depends on risk, user groups, and regulatory expectations; IEC 62366-1 does not specify a fixed number. A common guideline is that at least 15 people should participate per user group, as required by the FDA for summative testing. We’ll work with you to determine the appropriate sample size during the briefing, tailored to your user groups and your regulatory strategy.
