    The background

The Swiss household appliances producer JURA Elektroapparate AG develops exclusive automatic coffee machines for office and commercial use. But it is not only the perfect coffee that is impressive about this company's products, it is also their fresh and innovative design.

    The starting point

The company intended to set new usability standards by developing a new interface. Therefore, UID was asked to design a new, exclusive interface. The goal was to develop an intuitive operational concept including designing the TFT display, whose aim it is to bring the user closer to the world of coffee.

    The objective

JURA stands for exclusive products that enthuse the customers. The aim of the new concept was to address this premium target group. Since UID designed the display of JURA's IMPRESSA J9 One Touch TFT, our usability experts were now asked to give the high-end GIGA 5 a new face. JURA's objective and UID's task: brand differentiation based on design. This was going to be achieved by making the ease-of-use and the high quality of the appliance visible at first glance.

    The procedure

    • In a joint kick-off meeting, UID and JURA defined the high standards that an interaction concept for the automatic coffee machine must meet. First, UID analyzed the usage context by talking to JURA's experts and conducting user tests at UID.
    • In look-and-feel workshops, several mood charts and icon styles were developed as a basis for the final design.
    • The experts' evaluations based on various user scenarios then revealed possible issues that needed to be worked on. UID used these data to develop and implement convincing solutions.

    The result

The new, intuitive operational concept meets JURA's high demands. The images used clearly reflect the world of coffee. The coffee machine can be operated in two ways: by using the soft keys at the edge of the display or a touch/turn button, the so-called rotary switch. The new concept's main advantage is that it ensures simple operation. Information on maintenance tasks like cleaning the machine, for example, is now displayed as a percentage view. Therefore, the users always know what task needs to be carried out when.
