Technology of the future: our research projects

We participate in national and international research projects, working together with leading research institutions, and we are proud to present some of our current research projects.

  • CCE (2009–2012): Standardized technical platform for assistance systems

With our partners, we are developing a standardized technical platform for assistance systems. It is intended to make independent living easier for people suffering from dementia.

    UID's contribution

    • Eliciting the specific requirements using interviews with affected people, such as patients, relatives and nursing staff
    • Developing and testing the prototype for user-friendliness
    • Creating general guidelines for user interfaces for AAL products

    Sponsor

The European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (grant ID 16SV3817)

  • IMPACT (2010–2013): Platform for exchanging information in the political arena

The project team is developing a platform for information, exchange and participation in the political arena. The aim is to model and visualize political opinion by outlining arguments and interests in a compact and transparent way.

The European Union (grant ID 247228)

  • inDago (since 2011): Seamless mobility chains in everyday life

Together with our partners, we are developing a technical device that permits independent mobility for people with physical limitations. This gives older people in particular more freedom and flexibility, since they can reach their destination safely and without accessibility restrictions despite limited vision, hearing and mobility.

    UID's contribution

    • Product design of a device for barrier-free mobility
    • Designing the user interface

     Sponsor

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (grant number ZIM 16SV5716)

  • SCRIPT (since 2011): Assistance systems for the rehabilitation of stroke patients

The aim of the project is to develop assistance systems that support stroke patients during rehabilitation. In addition to a rehab robot, motivational rehab games are also being developed.

    UID's contribution

    • Product design for the rehab robot
    • Designing motivational rehab games

    Sponsor

The European Union (EU ICT Call 7 FP7-ICT-2011-7; grant ID: 288698 )

  • VAALID (2007–2011): Development environment for AAL solutions

VAALID (2007–2011): Development environment for AAL solutions

UID is designing and testing a development environment for AAL solutions with seven international partners. It permits AAL solutions to be modeled on the PC and to test them in 'reality' before they are actually implemented.

    UID's contribution

    • Conceptual design of the user interface
    • Testing the interaction in virtual reality using usability tests and focus groups with senior citizens

    Sponsor

The European Union (FP7/2007-2013; grant number 224309)

  • V2me (2010–2013): Virtual social network for senior citizens

V2me (2010–2013): Virtual social network for senior citizens

The V2me project combines the actual living sphere of older people with elements of virtual social networks. The overarching goal is to foster the joy of living in network members and to integrate them better into society.

    UID's contribution

    • Uncovering requirements using context interviews, observations and questionnaires
    • Designing and testing the user interface of the interactive system

  • WiMi-Care (2008–2011): Service robots in nursing

WiMi-Care (2008–2011): Service robots in nursing

Together with project partners such as the Fraunhofer IPA, UID is developing and testing two service robots that are optimally designed to meet the needs and everyday requirements of nursing home staff and residents. The service robots are intended to support nursing staff in routine activities, such as transporting laundry, to give them more time for the residents.

    UID's contribution

    • Developing usage scenarios using scenario-based design
    • Designing and implementing the user interface for both service robot
    • Conducting two pilot tests in a Stuttgart nursing home

    Sponsor

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (grant number 01FC08024-27)
