Combined optimization: Ergonomics and design for Schubert
With the touch screen control of the TLM packaging machines, Gerhard Schubert GmbH - the market leader in the field of digital packaging machines - provides an interface which is approved and quick to learn. For the user-centered optimization of the usability, Schubert relied on the longtime experience and competence of UID.

The background
Gerhard Schubert GmbH is the market leader in the field of digital packaging machines. The focus of manufacturing lies in the innovative TLM packaging machines set up und controlled via an operating panel with touch screen interface. This interface is supposed to increasingly display and make accessible the states and functions of integrated third-party products.
The starting point
With the touch screen control of the TLM packaging machines, Schubert offers an interface which is approved and quick to learn. The screen displays important information and can be adjusted to the customer's requests. Some things however could be improved: the operating sequence seemed to be complex and physical restrictions of the users were only partly taken into consideration. Furthermore, Schubert wanted to allow for the specific requirements of a touch screen interface to a larger extent and modernize the design to underline the company-own demand for quality on the face of the machine, its control panel.
The objectives
- Optimize the usability of the TLM operating panel to ensure that lower qualified users are able to effectively and efficiently user the machine after short training and without using an operating manual.
- Revise the graphical design to optimally display operating information in the context of work.
- Create a modern appearance which emphasizes the high quality of the machine.
- Resume the corporate identity of Schubert GmbH which has been established on the market.
The procedure
In a workshop, the experts of User Interface Design GmbH (UID) first familiarized themselves with the existing concept of the TLM operating panel as well as with the work environment and the user groups. An expert review which took place in parallel revealed the weak spots and formed the basis for optimization ideas. Subsequently, the UID experts demonstrated the optimized interaction concept by means of wire frames. The graphical design of some selected screens and the preparation of graphics and icons were the next steps. Here, the technical feasibility of the drafts played an essential role and was therefore permanently checked.
The result
The optimized structuring of the user interface allows better orientation and more visual clarity. Clear messages inform the user about current procedures. Distinct icons and graphics as well as a reduced navigation ensure intuitive operation. The structure and design of the interface and the elements allow for the requirements of a touch screen interface. The restrained and targeted use of colors resumes the corporate identity, gives the impression of a respectable company, and sets a clear focus at the same time.
