Canoo Online Shop demonstrates intuitivity and attractiveness

The background

Canoo Engineering AG offers customized Java solutions for business applications as well as software development products, including UltraLightClient, a Java library for the development of rich Internet applications (RIA). To demonstrate the numerous features of the product, Canoo offers their customers demo applications, such as the implementation of an online shop.

The starting point

Before the redesign, the look and feel of the demo online shop was no longer state-of-the art, which made it difficult to distinguish itself from its competitors. Furthermore, the product was not user-friendly due to a suboptimal positioning of central elements, a missing logical navigation as well as self-explanatory icons.

The objectives

• Revise the impression and the design of the demo application and present a new, modern business look.
• Avoid the typical grey coloring of existing Java applications and consider the corporate identity.
• Adjust the interaction design to optimize the usability.

The procedure

The analysis of the existing demo application formed the basis of the subsequent design workshop, in which the usability experts developed mood charts and first design and interaction concepts together with Canoo. As a next step, the UID designs prepared three design variants, including experimental solutions. One of these variants was then optimized and refined.

The result

The look and feel of the demo application now clearly distinguishes itself from the competitors. The interface designed in an elegant black color combined with modern glass effects ensures an attractive and stylish design. At the same time, the coloring reflects the corporate identity. The innovative, round splash screen makes the application unique. A global navigation with a consistent positioning, a clear focus, and the logical positioning of central elements optimally support the user. The adjusted picture sizes ensure more calmness and a better structured overview.
