Nero StartSmart – Central access with user-oriented design

The background

Nero AG is the market leader in the field of digitala multimedia solutions. The Nero 7 Suite was already an all-round product. For the development of the latest version, the topic of usability was the focus. Especially Nero StartSmart was supposed to be developed and designed as a central access of Nero 8 according to user-oriented criteria.

The starting point

Before the new concept, Nero StartSmart was defined by a number of design languages, which resulted in the fact that the numerous functions were only perceived to a limited extent. Additionally, the product did not meet the expectations due to the inconsistent positioning of elements.

The objectives

• A new interaction and design concept for Nero StartSmart is supposed to be developed and implemented.
• The focus should lie on the interaction concept of Nero StartSmart providing central access to Nero 8.
• All functions of Nero StartSmart are supposed to be precisely communicated and quick to reach.

The procedure

Based on the use context analysis and requirements analysis, the UID designers developed first interaction and design concepts, which were then visualized, implemented as prototypes, and further developed.

The result

The new Nero StartSmart now shows a self-explanatory user interface. The structure is geared to the tasks of the users and was reduced to few levels. Thus, inexperienced users are guided and experienced users may use short cuts. All applications of Nero 8 Suite can be reached within two steps via Nero StartSmart. Besides, the UID-Designer prepared a styleguide describing the interactions and screens to ensure smooth implementation at Nero.
