Safe and intuitive design of medical products

UID and c&m introduce the new service of Medical Safety Design on the World Usability Day 2007

Whether it is the blood sugar meter, hearing device or electronical health insurance card: Everyone has to deal with medical products frequently. Risk Management for these products has long been compulsory. Since July 2007, usability also plays an important role. Medical Safety Design combines these elements to support easy and safe operation. User Interface Design GmbH (UID) and Jörg Stockhardt consulting & more (c&m) will introduce this new service on November 8, 2007 on the World Usability Day at Stuttgart, Munich, and Mannheim.

And the users of medical products can look forward to this since the new European standard DIN EN DIN EN 60601-1-6 came into effect on July 1, 2007, which obliges manufacturers of medical products to carry out and document usability measures. Additional requirements of product safety and risk management are defined in the standard ISO 14971. Alexander Steffen, Manager Medical Solutions at UID, explains the background: "When handling medical devices, low safety can have devastating effects for patients. Products that are safe and intuitive to use help to avoid these dangerous errors."

Usability and Risk Management - a combination that makes sense

The development of easy and safe medical products is supported by Medical Safety Design, a concept developed by UID and c&m. For this new service, usability and risk management experts have established a collaboration with the title Medical Safety Design to support manufacturers from the product idea via the development to certification. In six phases, the experts pass the user-centered design process, integrate results from clinical tests and prepare a final documentation for the submission at notified and certifying bodies.

UID and c&m expect a strong demand from the manufacturers, not only because of the new legal status. "Medical Safety Design reduces the liability risk and the risk of lawsuits", explains Jörg Stockhardt of c&m. Further advantages for the manufacturers are obvious: User-friendly medical products strengthen the market position of the manufacturer, make the products distinctive, and increase the acceptance of a product among the target group.

Launch at three locations and with a new Internet service

How important safe and easy-to-operate medical products are will be emphasized on the World Usability Day on November 8, 2007. The worldwide usability-promoting event addresses the topic of Health Care this year. UID will introduce the new service of Medical Safety Design at Stuttgart, Munich, and Mannheim. Additionally, a new Internet website of UID and c&m will inform about the design of user-friendly and safe medical products. Go to www.medical-safety-design.defor detailed information.
