"Making It Easy!" was the motto of the World Usability Day which took place 3 November all around the world with focus on e-government, e-commerce, and other commercial applications. The goal of this event was to familiarise the general public with the issue of usability and user-oriented design and to show the benefits of good usability. We wanted to create an interest especially with people who are not very familiar with this topic, who want to get information on usability engineering and who are interested in learning more about the work of usability professionals.
UID was sponsor the World Usability Day and took an active part in the events at Munich and Stuttgart.

"Art and science – interactive crossing of frontiers" was this year's motto of the Mensch & Computer conference. The conference tried to satisfy the important concern of establishing a dialogue between art, development, and science in order to reflect on design methods and to give room to comprehensive innovations. A dialogue between science and practice was also initiated this year on the basis of the presentations of practical issues provided by the Usability Professionals Track.
UID was sponsor of the Mensch & Computer 2005 and presented itself at the conference. Within the Usability Professionals Track UID actively participated in the sessions "Communication and specification of user interface design" and "Industrial products – easy to use".

This year, UID organized a workshop on June 29 on the topic of "E-Commerce - How visitors become customers". Even more important than precise guidelines on designing user experience is a systematic process. The workshop covered the theoretical and practical issues of the user-centred design process for e-commerce websites (according to ISO 13407). The focus lied on the essential phases of this process: requirements analysis, design, and evaluation. By means of case studies and practical examples, UID wanted to share its know-how gained in years on the successful application of the user-centred design process.
The workshop was supported by the companies Omikron (www.omikron.net) and Novomind (www.novomind.de) giving lectures on the topics of "User-friendly search and navigation" and "Data quality in online shops" as well as on the survey conducted by the German daily newspaper F.A.Z. "Deficiencies of German online shops from a user's perspective".

Convention "Online Trade 2005"
The Management Forum Bad Homburg organized the 2005 convention "Online Trade" under the motto "Online Shopping - The unrecognized boom market", representing many successful German e-commerce companies, e.g. expedia.de, karstadt.de, and autoscout24.de. Within the success forum of "customer loyalty", Andreas Selter (UID Manager Web Solutions) gave a lecture on 19 January 2005 on the topic "Not only simple, but also persuasive - Persuasiveness or why usability is just the beginning". In his lecture, he explained what messages an e-commerce company must communicate in order to be successful, how these messages can be successfully communicated via the web and how persuasiveness of e-commerce services can be evaluated.
